Answering the Call: Strengthening Basic Research | GBASE Determined to Win the Battle for Indigenous Basic Software

Published on 2023-08-01

The 15th issue of Qiushi Journal, a flagship publication of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, published on August 1, features an important article by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, Chinese President, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, titled "Strengthening Basic Research to Achieve Greater Self-Reliance in Science and Technology."

The article stresses that strengthening basic research is an urgent imperative for achieving greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology, and a necessary path toward building China into a science and technology powerhouse. It calls for a determined effort to achieve self-reliance in scientific instruments and equipment, operating systems, and basic software, encourages collaborative research among research institutions, universities, and enterprises, and aims to raise the level and application scale of homegrown alternatives, so that major basic research can soon be supported through China’s own research platforms, instruments, and equipment.

Sitting between applications above and infrastructure below, databases are the most critical linchpin in IT systems—often called the "crown jewel of basic software." Strengthening basic database research, grasping key technologies at the source and foundational levels, and creating a self‑trusted pillar of national significance are necessary for winning the battle for self‑reliance in basic software and achieving high‑level technological self‑reliance.

As a leading force in China's database industry, GBASE (General Data Technology Co., Ltd.) has always adhered to independent innovation. Actively responding to the call of the CPC and the state, it has deeply participated in the "863 Program," the "Core Electronic Devices, High‑End Chips, and Basic Software" key project, and the "Independent and Controllable" strategy. Committed to database basic research, GBASE has developed the secure and stable GBase series of database products, forging a distinctive innovation path to overcome "bottleneck" challenges.

GBASE maintains long‑term cooperation with academia, engaging in joint research with more than ten universities including Nankai University, Tianjin University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Beijing Institute of Technology. It has optimized university‑enterprise collaboration through joint database technology labs, cloud database research centers, and talent cultivation and development bases, providing support for coordinated core technology breakthroughs and high‑quality software talent development in IT application innovation.

Facing the new round of technological revolution, industrial transformation, and a fundamentally new international competitive landscape, GBASE will resolutely respond to the national call to strengthen basic research. It is determined to win the battle for self‑reliance in basic software, seize the trend of homegrown alternatives, and empower digital transformation and upgrades across all industries.
