What is the DB-Engines Ranking?

The DB-Engines ranking is a popularity list in the database field, ranking 419 databases worldwide (as of July 2023) and updated monthly. The higher the rank, the more popular the database. DB-Engines ranking data is often cited in technology evaluation scenarios to demonstrate a database’s maturity and popularity, making it one of the most authoritative ranking lists in the industry. In China, there is a similar third-party institution: the MoTianLun Chinese Database Ranking.

Recently, Yin Haiwen, a special contributor to the MoTianLun community, compared the DB-Engines ranking with the MoTianLun ranking, analyzing the current development of Chinese databases in the context of the latest rankings. In the article, the author briefly introduced the DB-Engines and MoTianLun rankings, compared their top 10 lists, total numbers of included databases, and mainstream database models, and then analyzed each Chinese database that made it into the DB-Engines ranking. He concluded: “Some Chinese databases have broken through national boundaries and gone global, moving from a single pioneer to a cluster of contenders, expanding the influence of China’s software industry around the world.” (Quoted from Yin Haiwen’s article published on MoTianLun)

Looking at database popularity rankings, whether DB-Engines or MoTianLun, open-source databases tend to rank higher due to their low cost and easy accessibility. As a commercial database vendor, GBase achieving such a strong position in the DB-Engines ranking, a global evaluation system, is truly remarkable.

In fact, GBase has long stood out in the global market. Previously, GBase was consistently included in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Management Solutions; in the “Gartner Critical Capabilities for Data Warehouse Solutions” evaluation, GBase ranked seventh in the world, surpassing industry giants such as IBM and Snowflake. In the globally recognized TPC-DS benchmark for data management system evaluation, GBase ranked third worldwide, using the fewest test nodes among all participants, achieving the best per-core performance and the best data loading performance.

In recent years, with the broad and in-depth implementation of China’s IT application innovation initiative, Chinese databases have undergone leapfrog development in terms of vendors, technology, and products. They have now matched the capabilities of databases used in many application scenarios and even surpassed them in specific scenarios. More and more independently developed database products, like GBase, are going global, contributing to users around the world. This also indirectly validates that China’s database industry is gradually transitioning from a follower and participant to a visionary and leader.

GBase remains focused on core database technologies and continuously improves its service levels to broadly support the digital transformation and IT application innovation of domestic users — this is our near-term goal. Continuously deepening core technology research, participating in the global business layout of databases, and making the voice of Chinese databases heard — this remains our unwavering long-term vision.
