December 29, openGauss Summit 2022 was held online. The summit is an annual database industry conference for exchange and sharing, jointly hosted by the openGauss open-source database community in collaboration with industry organizations, partners, and customers. General Data Technology Co., Ltd. (GBASE) participated in the summit for the first time as a member of the openGauss Community Council, and fully supported and hosted the sub-forum "Distributed Database Technology and Practice."

openGauss is an open-source database designed for enterprise core application scenarios. Over the two years since open-sourcing, it has driven innovation with the industry and achieved remarkable progress in technology, business, ecosystem, community, and talent. Starting from data, it has provided strong momentum for enterprise digital transformation.

The openGauss Community Council is the community's decision-making and leadership body, strictly executing relevant responsibilities, formulating community development strategies, and promoting communication and in-depth collaboration among community members. After joining the Community Council this time, GBASE will work with other council members to drive the community's ecosystem and development, committed to making openGauss the best enterprise-grade open-source database.

The summit invited academic experts, industry organizations, enterprise customers, ecosystem partners, and community contributors to jointly explore new paths for database innovation and development, exchange new ideas for data ecosystem building, share new achievements in enterprise digital transformation, and collectively accelerate the advancement of the open-source database industry.

The GBASE sub-forum invited Hu Zhengce, Secretary-General of the openGauss Community, to deliver the opening speech. Wang Wei, Product Director of GBase 8c; Li Kai, Product Director; Wang Feipeng, Deputy Director of the Production Operations Center and Chief Database Expert of the Information Technology Department of China Bohai Bank; Rong Yupeng, Manager of the Platform R&D Department of Tongfang Softbank; Wang Ban, Product Director of Sunyard Technology Co., Ltd.; and Sha Yong, General Manager of the Solution Center of E-time Information Technology Co., Ltd., as well as several customer representatives, database technology experts, and partner representatives, discussed Kunpeng ecosystem development and practical implementation of distributed databases combined with other data application products.

1. Keeping Pace with the Times and Offering Versatile Capabilities – GBase 8c Aligns with Distributed Database Trends

Wang Wei, Product Director of GBase 8c, took the evolution of distributed databases as the entry point to analyze development trends. GBase 8c, built through sustained accumulation, is a multi-model, multi-state distributed database based on openGauss 3.0. It supports multiple storage modes including row, columnar, and in-memory, and deployment forms such as single-instance, primary-standby, and distributed. GBase 8c features high performance, high availability, elastic scalability, and high security. It can be deployed on physical machines, virtual machines, containers, private clouds, and public clouds, providing secure, stable, and reliable data storage and management services for core systems in critical industries, Internet business systems, and government and enterprise systems.

  • Multiple storage engines can handle traditional transaction processing or high-concurrency, high-availability scenarios, as well as HTAP mixed workloads, including precise and efficient risk control scenarios. In the future, embedded and time-series capabilities will be gradually added to support more scenarios such as the Internet of Things.
  • Multiple deployment forms provide users with flexible resource deployment options. Based on their own IT infrastructure and considering performance, convenience, and security requirements, they can configure as needed. Horizontal scaling out or in is supported during business expansion or low-peak periods.

2. Core Technologies and Practices of Distributed Databases

What core technologies should a commercially deployable distributed database possess? How to integrate and balance technology and business value? In terms of performance optimization, transaction processing, data distribution, distributed features, high availability, and O&M management, GBase 8c delivers a compelling answer. Li Kai, Product Director of GBase 8c, gave a speech focusing on these core technical points, using distributed practice as an example.

Data Distribution Strategy

GBase 8c supports replicated tables and distributed tables, using data distribution strategies to avoid resource contention during parallel computing while improving system performance.

Adaptive Transaction Processing Mechanism

GBase 8c adopts an adaptive transaction processing mechanism to enhance system performance. For local transactions, the coordinator processes them according to the local transaction flow; for cross-node transactions, the coordinator orchestrates participants to perform two-phase commit, ensuring global transaction consistency. The entire transaction processing flow is transparent to clients.

Global Deadlock Handling

In GBase 8c, after a deadlock cycle is detected among nodes, the transaction of the node that first detected the deadlock is rolled back, thereby resolving the global deadlock.
