And the Winners Are... Results of the Second "GBase 8s New Version Public Beta with Prizes" Event Announced
The GBase Community held the second "GBase 8s New Version Public Beta with Prizes" event from September to October 2024. After evaluation by the judges, 15 volunteers won awards, and over 230 valuable pieces of feedback and requirements were collected. Compared to the first beta event, both the number of awardees and the volume of feedback increased significantly. This event not only gathered a wide range of issues and requirements but also provided deeper insights into users' real needs, enabling targeted improvements in product maturity and charting the course for future upgrades. It was a major milestone for the GBase 8s database, GEM tool, and MTK tool. We hope that with the help of our dedicated volunteers, GBase 8s will better meet user needs, become even easier to use, and reach new heights!
Guided by the belief that "Many hands make light work; premium domestic products rely on collective effort," the beta recruited 30 volunteers from users, partners, and students of the GBase community. Volunteers dedicated their spare time to installing and testing the GBase 8s database, the GEM management tool, and the MTK migration tool, then compiled test reports. They submitted a total of 230+ insights, doubling the number from the previous beta. With a spirit of sincere collaboration, open-mindedness, and continuous improvement, the GBase 8s product team reviewed all feedback and suggestions. Some items have already been incorporated into the development plan for the next version and will be improved or implemented soon. Awards were granted based on contribution, quality, and effort. After evaluation, 8 volunteers who submitted test reports were selected to receive Contribution Awards.

Compared to the first event, this round saw a significant increase in both participants and community activity. I am honored to participate in the second GBase 8s public beta event. It broadened my skills in working with databases developed in China. I deeply appreciate how much General Data Technology values its beta participants, having set up a dedicated WeChat group with both operations and R&D staff to answer questions. Thanks to their prompt responses, I was able to complete the beta accurately and efficiently. Through this beta, I believe that GBase 8s features a rigorous product design, highlights distinctive features while staying compatible with other general-purpose and domestically developed databases. The MTK and GEM tools offer an excellent graphical interface for beginners and database professionals alike. When I stumbled upon the beta event information, as a techie passionate about databases developed in China, I was immediately drawn to it. During this beta, I primarily explored the GEM monitoring tool of GBase 8s. I was deeply impressed by this tool. It features an intuitive interface and comprehensive functions, meeting daily database monitoring needs. Although there is room for improvement in some areas, the overall experience was very smooth. I also tried the MTK migration tool, which performed excellently during Oracle-to-GBase data migration—easy to operate and seamless without any issues. Through this beta event, I gained a deeper understanding of GBase 8s and am now more excited about the future of databases developed in China. I believe that GBase 8s' continuous advancement and innovation will unlock even more possibilities in this field.

I participated in the first GBase 8s public beta back in March this year, after which the software developers at General Data Technology improved the product. Looking forward to the new features, I joined the second beta held this September. This time, I focused on installing, deploying, and testing the features of the GEM management tool and the GMTK migration tool. Over the course of a month, I proposed improvement suggestions based on issues encountered during testing. Throughout this hands-on process, I ran into some challenges, which sharpened my problem-solving skills and gave me a deeper understanding of the GBase 8s tools. Through this beta, I felt that the R&D team at General Data Technology is highly professional. Compared to many similar domestically developed databases, GBase 8s excels in installation/deployment, cluster management, O&M monitoring, and data migration.
