Agricultural Bank of China and General Data Technology Co., Ltd. Establish Joint Innovation Lab

Published on 2020-08-21

On October 16, the signing and unveiling ceremony of the Agricultural Bank of China – GBase Joint Innovation Lab, themed “Technology Empowers Financial Innovation, Collaboration Shapes the Future of Technology,” was held in Beijing.

Cai Zhao, General Manager of the Agricultural Bank of China R&D Center; Yao Hu, Deputy General Manager; Zhao Weiping, Senior Expert; together with Yin Lina, Chairwoman of General Data Technology (GBase); Wu Xin, CEO; Lu Ming, R&D Director; Zhang Shaoyong, Product Director; and other senior executives from both sides attended the ceremony and unveiled the jointly established Joint Innovation Lab.

Building on a solid foundation of prior collaboration, the Joint Innovation Lab was established to focus on the future of banking. Both parties will engage in more comprehensive and in-depth cooperation in areas such as big data, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing, creating powerful fintech tools and jointly incubating outstanding achievements in financial technology.

  • Independent and Controllable Domestic Technology Drives Financial Innovation

Since 2013, Agricultural Bank of China has been cooperating with General Data Technology (GBase). Over the past six years, the two parties have conducted in-depth research and adaptation of the MPP database, completing hundreds of optimizations and improvements. Today, the GBase 8a MPP Cluster, a massively parallel distributed database cluster, has enabled ABC's big data platform to run stably and efficiently for over 1,100 days, supporting more than 600 nodes and managing 20 PB of data.

Cai Zhao, General Manager of the ABC R&D Center, stated in his speech: “Agricultural Bank of China places a high priority on fintech innovation. Since November 2013, our joint team has made hundreds of optimizations and improvements to the MPP database covering fundamental architecture, high reliability, high availability, and performance. These enhancements have enabled the product to meet the requirements of core financial systems in terms of performance, functionality, stability, and security—filling a gap in the domestic market. As a result, ABC became the first bank in China to complete the domestic substitution of an MPP database, pioneering the use of domestically developed foundational software for mission-critical financial systems.”

Yin Lina, Chairwoman of GBase, remarked: “Six years ago, ABC realized that foundational software must not be controlled by others and resolutely embarked on the path of localization. Over the past six years, ABC’s strong sense of responsibility in supporting domestically developed, independently controllable products, coupled with its pragmatic IT construction philosophy, has given GBase full trust, support, and understanding. This has enabled GBase to make significant strides in products, talent, customer base, and brand.”

  • Data-Empowered Re-innovation & Collaboration Leading to a New Future

In recent years, fintech has flourished, with new technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing advancing at a breakneck pace, profoundly reshaping the traditional financial industry’s landscape, business models, and service delivery. The deep integration of emerging technologies with traditional banking services will become another significant inflection point for industry upgrading.

President Xi Jinping stressed in a keynote speech in March that China must keep its own rice bowl firmly in its hands, mainly filled with Chinese grain. Cai Zhao added: “In the big data domain, we see this grain as ‘data,’ and the rice bowl as database products. As a bank serving over 900 million customers with massive data assets, together with GBase, a leader in the domestic database field, we have the responsibility to explore how to fill our ‘rice bowl’ with high-quality ‘grain.’ Therefore, it is the perfect time to collaborate with a focus on ‘Research on Big Data and Intelligent Data Platforms for the Financial Sector.’ By establishing the Joint Innovation Lab, we will leverage our respective strengths in technology, customers, talent, and data to jointly incubate outstanding achievements in fintech.”

Zhao Weiping, Senior Expert at the ABC R&D Center, stated in his speech: “Six years of effort sharpens a sword; ABC’s big data platform has achieved remarkable results through our joint efforts. Big data has a starting point but no finish line. We still have a long road ahead in big data, value discovery, and artificial intelligence.”

Wu Xin, CEO of GBase, commented: “Our partnership aligns perfectly with GBase’s strategic development. In its first decade, as a traditional database software vendor, GBase emerged as a leader among Chinese database providers and gained international recognition. In the next decade, we are focusing on converged big data platforms, DaaS, and AI, with full control over our source code. Our mission is to completely eliminate China’s reliance on foreign core technologies in databases and big data. We have already launched a big data platform that integrates relational and non-relational models—a core technology for the next-generation big data platform. In the future, this platform will be fully cloud-enabled, delivering services directly based on data and helping customers transform data resources into data assets. Currently, ABC is already using GBase’s big data platform technology, and the next step is to combine our AI achievements with fintech through the lab.”

  • A Powerful Partnership to Scale New Heights

During the ceremony, leaders from both sides signed the Joint Innovation Lab agreement and unveiled the lab’s nameplate.
