GBase was invited to attend the 37th CCF China National Database Conference (NDBC 2020)
The 37th CCF China National Database Conference (NDBC 2020) was held in Wuhan, Hubei Province, from October 16 to 18, 2020. The conference was hosted by the China Computer Federation (CCF), co-organized by the CCF Database Committee and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, with the participation of Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Technology, Central China Normal University, China University of Geosciences, Hubei University, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, South-Central Minzu University, and the Wuhan Computer Software Engineering Society. GBase Senior Vice President and CTO Zhao Wei was invited to attend the conference and delivered a keynote report titled "Building an Independent Standard and IP Framework: A Necessity" at the database industry-academia forum.
NDBC 2020 focused on the new challenges, issues, and directions for database technology amid the rise of artificial intelligence, exploring the deep integration of data management and AI. It aimed to reflect the latest advances in database technology research in China and to build a communication platform for database researchers, developers, and application enterprises. The conference invited distinguished scholars for keynote speeches, including Turing Award laureate, member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and database luminary Michael Stonebraker. It also organized various academic exchanges such as technical forums, educational forums, industry forums, and graduate student tutorials.
In his report "Building an Independent Standard and IP Framework: A Necessity", GBase Senior Vice President and CTO Zhao Wei pointed out that databases are among the computer science disciplines that best exemplify industry-academia collaboration. The fundamental theories of modern databases originated from industry needs, and over the past 50 years, they have evolved into an important branch of computer science, continuously developing in response to user requirements and hardware advancements.
Under the current severe international technology landscape, developing self-controlled foundational software and hardware products is critical, but building an independent standard and IP patent layout system is even more urgent and essential. Chinese database enterprises and universities have filed patents in a fragmented manner, lacking the scale, quality, and coverage to compete with the decades-long patent barriers accumulated by foreign monopolies. Zhao Wei proposed that China's database industry and academia should collaborate through industry-academia partnerships to establish independent standards and IP patent alliances in emerging database technology areas, thereby countering potential foreign political and IP risks.
In addition, Zhao Wei cited the financial distributed database standard specifications of the People's Bank of China (PBOC) as an example and proposed research directions for domestic database industry-academia collaboration to build independent standards and IP alliances.
