On December 12, the results of the 6th Big Data "Galaxy" case collection, jointly organized by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and the Big Data Technology and Standards Committee (CCSA TC601) of the China Communications Standards Association, were officially announced. Two projects submitted by GBase as a supporting organization together with its clients stood out from 595 entries and were recognized: "Research and Practice of a Lakehouse Big Data Platform" and "Application and Practice of Building a Logical Data Warehouse in a Hybrid Architecture" received the 2022 Big Data "Galaxy" Benchmark Case and Excellent Case awards in the database category, respectively.

This case collection initiative aims to promote the development of big data technologies, products, and related industries, accelerate the cultivation of the data factor market, fully unleash the unique value of data as a production factor, set industry benchmarks, and by summarizing and promoting outstanding achievements in the big data industry, drive the application of big data in social production and life, and foster the growth of big data technologies, products, and industries. The initiative widely solicited cases from the whole society in five key directions: industry data application, data security, privacy computing, data asset management, and database. In the database direction, 10 benchmark cases and 22 excellent cases were selected.

Benchmark Case: Research and Practice of a Lakehouse Big Data Platform

To solve problems faced by traditional big data platforms—such as low flexibility in resource scaling, high cost and long duration of data redistribution during expansion, large data redundancy, and resource contention in mixed-load scenarios—GBase provided the data warehouse foundation platform to support Shandong Mobile’s lakehouse construction. By introducing a lakehouse architecture based on separation of storage and compute, it integrates multiple data engines including OLTP, OLAP, and Hadoop, achieving data sharing and mutual access among various data engines, unified data management, and ultimately building a lakehouse big data platform through cloud data warehouse and Hadoop engine with HDFS and object storage.

The lakehouse big data platform satisfies data sharing and circulation for multiple data types and provides a unified, transparent access interface externally. The storage and compute layers are deployed separately, supporting independent elastic scaling of both storage and compute. It caters to different query scenarios and handles both batch and streaming processing of massive data, enabling real-time analytics.

Excellent Case: Application and Practice of Building a Logical Data Warehouse in a Hybrid Architecture

With the continuous expansion of 4G/5G communication networks, operator data has rapidly grown from terabytes to petabytes. To meet the data storage and processing requirements of massive data volumes and diverse data types, Sichuan Mobile proposed building a hybrid architecture with traditional relational databases (RDB) + MPP + Hadoop to transform its big data platform. The original DB2 database was replaced with GBase 8a, and a logical data warehouse was built on this foundation.

The project delivered significant cost reductions and efficiency gains after implementation. Data analysis performance improved noticeably, and database scalability was greatly enhanced. Through data model restructuring in the project, the strengths of various databases were fully leveraged, making data storage more rational, improving the overall data processing capability of the big data platform, and better supporting future business growth. With GBase 8a’s logical data warehouse technology, the MPP database and Hadoop platform are deeply integrated, enabling unified management and analysis of multi-source heterogeneous data, improving business development efficiency, shortening data processing timelines, and meeting telecom-grade big data analysis requirements.

Over twenty years of development, GBase has built a data product portfolio covering the full data management lifecycle and full technology stack. Its products have been deployed in mission-critical business systems across multiple industries such as finance and telecommunications, delivering tailored database products and services through scenario-based solutions. In the big data arena, as the first vendor to launch a columnar database in China, GBase has a strong track record and extensive accomplishments in data warehouse construction. These awards in the 2022 Big Data "Galaxy" initiative will further motivate GBase to stay focused on the database industry and help enterprise users drive digital transformation.
