GBASE Empowers a Bank in Macau to Build a Foundational Data Platform with MPP Architecture, Enabling Unified Management of Models, Metrics, and ETL, and Providing Solution-Level Reusability for Other Users in the Financial Industry.

Project Overview

As the business of a bank in Macau continues to grow, data accumulation increases day by day, massive historical data remains underutilized, and financial business and service innovation lack IT technology support. How to leverage massive data resources for value realization and business monetization has become key to enhancing core competitiveness and seizing market opportunities. With the growth of data volume and changes in business scenarios, the scope of data retrieval and computation continuously expands, and the scheduling of the entire ETL process becomes increasingly complex. This not only increases operational costs but also makes data quality assurance difficult.

To meet the user needs for data query and analysis at the bank in Macau, GBase 8a MPP Cluster, a large-scale distributed parallel database cluster system, is adopted to replace DB2 and build a new data platform, meeting user expectations and delivering higher value.

The data platform uses GBase 8a cluster to support TB-scale data volumes. Through GBase 8a's columnar storage, intelligent indexing, high compression, and other technologies, disk I/O access is effectively reduced, resulting in significant improvements in query and statistical analysis compared to the original system; it supports ad-hoc queries and multidimensional analysis; and it underpins various complex BI application analytics displays.

Results

The bank in Macau's original data platform system was DB2, which has now been fully migrated to run on the GBase 8a cluster, significantly improving the report generation performance of the bank's data warehouse.

Benefits and Value

  • Massive storage: Enables cluster loading of TB-scale data with performance up to 20TB/hour. Also provides high compression ratio for data ingestion, enhancing performance;
  • Ad-hoc queries: Under large data volumes, achieves fast and efficient ad-hoc queries with sub-second response, providing stable support for scheduling systems;
  • Statistical analysis: Greatly improves fast analysis performance for the industry, with 2~10 times performance gain over the original system, and complex statistical analyses respond in seconds;
  • Unified management: Serves as the foundational platform for the data scheduling platform, enabling unified management of models, metrics, and ETL;
  • Data backup: Provides periodic export and backup of important data from the user's data warehouse platform, including instance-level, database-level, and table-level backups;
  • High scalability: Supports online expansion and contraction of cluster nodes, protecting customer investment and allowing future system expansion as needed to support more data, business, and users.

Future Collaboration

With the rapid business growth of the bank, and after more than a year of stable operation of GBase 8a MPP, the bank in Macau will soon upgrade and expand its GBase 8a MPP cluster to better meet current and future data analysis needs, achieving a comprehensive optimization and upgrade of the data platform. Let's look forward to GBASE and the bank in Macau joining hands again to face future opportunities and challenges together.
