Project Overview

Background

Traffic-driven services have become central to Hebei Unicom’s strategic transformation. The legacy business analytics system built on traditional minicomputers and Oracle, limited by cost and performance, could no longer meet the company’s data processing demands.

Hebei Unicom adopted GBase 8a MPP Cluster as its foundational data platform. Using GBase 8a, it built a core data warehouse to store high-value structured data across all business domains. By performing cross-domain correlation analysis, the system delivers highly aggregated results to the platform application layer and peripheral system interfaces, while directly supporting front-end report and ad‑hoc queries.

Business Requirements

The traditional minicomputer-plus-Oracle analytics system, constrained by cost and performance, could no longer satisfy Hebei Unicom’s data processing requirements. With more business platforms coming online, the provincial analytics system was projected to reach petabyte scale—far beyond the capacity of the existing platform. To enable precise customer profiling, data content and internet data all needed to be converged into a unified data platform. Faced with these urgent challenges, Hebei Unicom followed the guiding principle of “high efficiency at low cost,” balancing massive data storage and management with powerful processing and analytics. It deployed GBase 8a MPP Cluster as the underlying data platform to build a big data platform that integrates business operations and delivers data services externally.

Solution

The project deployed more than 20 GBase 8a MPP Cluster nodes to build the core data warehouse, using GBase 8a’s high-speed loading tools to rapidly ingest data. The GBase 8a warehouse stores high-value structured data from all business domains, performs cross-domain correlation analysis, and provides highly aggregated results to the platform application layer and peripheral system interfaces, while directly supporting front-end report and ad‑hoc queries.

Deployment

The platform has been deployed across dozens of nodes (management and data nodes), holding hundreds of terabytes of data and tens of thousands of tables.

Deeper data convergence: Data from all provincial business support systems is fully integrated, with extended retention periods.

Seamless migration: GBase engineers provided full support for migrating data and applications from Oracle to GBase 8a MPP, with the original system running unchanged on GBase 8a MPP.
