GBASE Powers the Comprehensive Analysis System for China Unicom Shandong

Project Background

Shandong Unicom’s comprehensive analysis system had been running on Oracle RAC since its initial IT deployment. With the rise of big data and IoT technologies, rapid business growth kept the legacy architecture in a state of high storage utilization and performance bottlenecks over an extended period. To better adapt to big data trends, Shandong Unicom decided to upgrade the existing architecture and replace it with a database solution developed in China.

Implementation Plan

Drawing on OLAP scenarios and mainstream database selection in China, Shandong Unicom quickly chose GBase 8a MPP to transform its comprehensive analysis system, supporting big data applications such as mobile network signaling data, fixed-line internet access records, business analysis CDRs, and IPTV data.

After multiple construction phases, the current platform features GBase 8a MPP V86 on a 26-node cluster, housing nearly 36,000 tables and close to 2,000 stored procedures, with roughly 45 TB of new data daily—delivering strong network analysis support.

Value Delivered

Architecture Upgrade: The MPP architecture ensures sustained high-speed business growth, with data storage and performance scaling linearly as nodes are added.

Performance Boost: Compared with Oracle, MPP delivers over 10x overall performance improvement for massive structured data queries, analytics, and other big data workloads.

Technology Independence: Aligns with directives from China’s central government, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and China Unicom Group for replacing legacy infrastructure with domestic alternatives.

Cost Reduction & Efficiency: Domestic databases combined with x86 architecture dramatically lower both software and hardware procurement costs.
