Integrated Undergraduate-Graduate Education, Industry-Academia-Research   Strategic Cooperation Drives Development

On December 16, 2021, the signing and awarding ceremony of the strategic cooperation agreement between the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science of Hebei University of Technology and Tianjin General Data Technology Co., Ltd. (GBase), along with the integrated undergraduate-graduate seminar, was held in Room 302 of the School of Intelligence at Hebei University of Technology’s Beichen Campus. The event was aimed at exploring a new model for industry-academia-research collaboration in the intelligent industry and promoting in-depth interdisciplinary integration and development.

Ma Dai, Executive Deputy Dean of Hebei University of Technology’s Undergraduate School, delivered a speech. He first extended a warm welcome to all attendees, noting that Hebei University of Technology was founded in 1903 and is one of China’s earliest higher education institutions dedicated to cultivating industrial talent, having also established one of the country’s first university-run factories. Over 118 years, the university has upheld the educational tradition of “Revitalizing the Nation through Industry” and the motto “Diligence, Prudence, Public-Spiritedness, and Loyalty,” forming a distinctive “Integration of Engineering and Learning” education approach. It is a key university in China’s first batch of “Project 211” institutions, jointly supported by Hebei Province, Tianjin Municipality, and the Ministry of Education, and a “Double First-Class” university, having produced over 300,000 outstanding graduates for the nation.

The university has always insisted on cultivating practical talents who “attach importance to practice and are diligent in thinking.” To comprehensively deepen the integration of industry and education and explore new mechanisms for university-enterprise collaborative education, the university initiated the “Hundred Enterprise Matchmaking” visit program for undergraduate internship bases in Hebei and Tianjin. The goal is to establish a number of high-quality undergraduate practice bases, fully advance the “Prospering Engineering Plan,” and, by taking university-enterprise cooperation as an opportunity and new engineering education as a guide, seek strategies from the market, insights from industry, and requirements from enterprises, thereby building a new win-win model of university-enterprise collaboration.

Zhao Wei, Senior Vice President and CTO of GBase, addressed the audience. Tianjin General Data Technology Co., Ltd. (GBase), founded in 2004, is the only independent database vendor in China that focuses entirely on database product R&D and has achieved large-scale deployment in the financial and telecommunications sectors. GBase is a national-level high-tech enterprise, a key software enterprise under China’s National Planning Layout, and a member of the IT Application Innovation (ITAI) Working Committee (0048). For consecutive years, it has been recognized by CCID Consulting, under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as a leading provider of China-developed databases. To date, GBase has delivered full-stack, China-developed database products and services to over 10,000 users across sectors including finance, telecommunications, government, energy, transportation, national defense, and large enterprises.

GBase focuses on the sustained competitiveness of its products and places great emphasis on cultivating its engineering team. Database products are a concentrated embodiment of “industry, academia, research, and application.” Core database concepts and prototypes—such as the relational model, ACID, transactions, NewSQL, and NoSQL—all originated from academic research in universities before being productized and brought to market by the industry. The database discipline is driven by user demands, developed into systematic theory through research and development, and highly oriented toward the application layer. The company will invest substantial funds and technology, confident that the deepening of university-enterprise cooperation will continuously deliver more top-tier talent for the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Ji Zhiyong, Deputy Dean of the Graduate School

Ji Zhiyong pointed out the need to pool resources from scientific education and industry-education integration to build a platform that merges industry with scientific research. This will promote multidisciplinary interaction and integration in graduate education and enhance the engineering practice capabilities of professional master’s students. Leveraging the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science as a platform, interdisciplinary joint guidance will be carried out to better advance the co-supervision of professional master’s students.

Zhang Jian, Deputy Dean of the School of Science

Zhang Jian introduced the School of Science and its main academic directions, while speaking highly of current collaborations between undergraduate graduation design projects and enterprises. He expressed hope that both sides’ strengths could be combined to promote joint undergraduate training and curriculum development cooperation.

Gu Junhua, Dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

Gu Junhua expressed the intention to intensify cooperation with enterprises in joint undergraduate training and in-depth research practice for graduate students. By utilizing the existing platforms and experience of the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, they will fully support the construction of the talent training base, jointly innovate cooperation models and mechanisms, and co-establish a university-enterprise scientific research platform. This will advance deep, multi-dimensional cooperation in all aspects, fostering the cultivation of innovative talent and disciplinary development, and ushering in a new phase of mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.

GBase Senior Vice President Zhao Wei signed the “Undergraduate Off-Campus Internship Base Agreement” with Ma Dai, Executive Deputy Dean of the Undergraduate School, and the “Graduate Off-Campus Internship Base Agreement” with Ji Zhiyong, Deputy Dean of the Graduate School. On behalf of Hebei University of Technology, Dean Ma Dai officially presented the plaque for “University-Enterprise Collaborative Internship and Training Base” to Tianjin General Data Technology Co., Ltd. (GBase) and issued letters of appointment to the enterprise mentors.

Promotion Work Symposium

Representatives from both sides then held a symposium on the promotion of this comprehensive cooperation. Discussions revolved around topics such as undergraduate and graduate curriculum design and collaborative training, creating a university-enterprise collaborative innovation lab for joint technical research and research project applications, constructing internship and training bases and selecting graduation design topics, and aligning corporate recruitment needs with employment guidance efforts.

Finally, the GBase HR team held a recruitment presentation at the School of Intelligence for soon-to-graduate seniors. They introduced GBase’s background and available positions, receiving an enthusiastic response and positive feedback from the students.
