【GBASE Application】“Tianqing” Unleashed, GBase 8a Drives the Meteorological Industry into the Big Data Era

Published on 2020-12-17

At 8:00 on December 15, version 1.0 of the Meteorological Big Data Cloud Platform “Tianqing” began trial operation at the National Meteorological Information Center and 28 provincial (autonomous region/municipality) meteorological bureaus including Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanxi, marking the official adaptation of meteorological operations to the big data era and effectively advancing the transformation and upgrading of operational and administrative management technologies. GBase 8a MPP Database will provide robust support for the “Tianqing” Meteorological Big Data Cloud Platform, enabling online storage, management and application of 100PB-level massive data.

The big data era has already begun. Meteorological agencies have accumulated vast data resources, and as monitoring becomes more precise and multi-source data converges extensively, meteorological data is growing explosively. It is estimated that by 2022, internal and external meteorological data will reach 45PB, with a daily increment of 40TB. At the same time, rapid data ingestion and processing, online analysis of long-series data, integrated application of multi-source data, and intelligent forecasting and service algorithms based on data mining and machine learning all require big data technology support.

“Tianqing” consolidates meteorological data and algorithm resources, moving algorithms closer to data to eliminate redundancies caused by repeated calls, storage and transmission across isolated systems. This makes it a critical lever for meteorological agencies to adapt to the big data era, drive the transformation of meteorological business systems, and optimize end-to-end workflows.

“Tianqing” is fundamentally a “cloud+edge” platform. With it, algorithm developers and operators no longer need to worry about data locality—they simply develop and submit algorithms to generate products. Combined with high-performance computing and streamlined pipeline scheduling, it optimizes the entire business workflow and fosters application collaboration.

GBase 8a MPP Database is a key component of the “Tianqing” big data platform, empowering its 100PB-level massive data online storage, management and application. It builds an efficient distributed, real-time and historical unified data storage and management system across national and provincial levels, meeting the timeliness requirements for massive data access and analysis, and effectively advancing the informatization and intensification of national and provincial meteorological data sharing and business applications.

In the future, once “Tianqing” is fully built, while 100PB-level massive data is stored online, core real-time data between the China Meteorological Administration and provinces can be synchronized within seconds; real-time interactive applications will respond in sub-seconds, and historical long-series analysis and multi-dimensional spatial analysis will complete in seconds. New IT support will drive intelligent development of meteorological forecasting and service models.
