Breakthrough in Performance and Energy Efficiency | GBase Database Pioneers Support for Intel® Xeon® 6 Efficient-core Processors

Published on 2024-06-12

On June 6, Intel held a product launch event themed 'Greener Innovation, Unleashing New Quality Productive Forces', introducing the Intel® Xeon® 6 Efficient-core processor, delivering high performance, high density, high energy efficiency, and low TCO to meet diverse cloud-scale workloads. GBASE, a long-time strategic partner of Intel, was invited to attend the conference. Zhao Wei, Senior Vice President of the company, shared a keynote on how GBase 8a MPP Cluster, equipped with Intel® Xeon® 6 Efficient-core processors, achieves leap-forward innovation.

With the cloudification of enterprise businesses and the explosion of AI applications such as large language models, data has become one of the most critical assets for organizations. As data grows exponentially, data types diversify, and the demand for faster data processing and analytics increases, enterprise database systems face severe challenges in terms of performance, cost, and energy consumption.

• Enhanced database performance for rapid decision support: the ever-changing business environment demands faster decision support. Combined with exponential data growth, databases face greater processing pressure, requiring higher performance to deliver real-time data insights under high concurrency.

• Better control of IT operating costs: large-scale database systems imply substantial investment in IT infrastructure, including not only hardware procurement costs but also ongoing operational expenses such as energy consumption.

To enhance system performance and energy efficiency, GBase 8a MPP Cluster, equipped with Intel® Xeon® 6 Efficient-core processors, builds a high-efficiency, energy-saving distributed logical data warehouse, achieving a leap-forward innovation in database technology.

The GBase 8a MPP Cluster is a high-performance database developed in China, designed for massive data query and analytics applications. It meets the growing data storage, management, and processing needs—such as data querying, statistics, analysis, mining, and backup—for data-intensive industries. With high performance, high availability, and high scalability, it provides a cost-effective general-purpose computing platform for data management systems of all sizes, and is widely used to support data warehouse systems, business intelligence (BI) systems, and decision support systems.

Over the past few months, engineering teams from GBASE and Intel have worked closely together. Running on the China-developed Kylin operating system, the GBase 8a MPP Cluster equipped with Intel® Xeon® 6 Efficient-core processors has delivered outstanding performance: achieving a dual breakthrough of 182% performance uplift and 135% energy efficiency ratio improvement, significantly increasing deployment density and per-node performance, while dramatically reducing overall system costs.

In summary, the GBase 8a MPP Cluster equipped with Intel® Xeon® 6 Efficient-core processors can deliver the following benefits to users:

  • Higher performance, enabling users to better handle the performance pressure of large-scale data processing;

  • Improved processor energy efficiency, combined with the elastic scaling advantages of GBase database, helps reduce operational costs such as energy consumption;

  • Increased compute resource density per node, helping to improve deployment density of database infrastructure, reduce scaling difficulty and operational pressure, control database cluster size, and enhance overall cluster stability;

  • Compression performance boosted by 1.2x with Intel® IAA compression.

The GBase 8a MPP Cluster, powered by Intel® Xeon® 6 Efficient-core processors, achieves significant energy efficiency gains, elevating database performance and energy efficiency to new heights. Looking ahead, GBASE will continue to collaborate with Intel, driven by core technology breakthroughs and guided by real-world business scenarios, to explore more hardware-software co-optimized joint solutions and provide robust momentum for the digital transformation of enterprise users.
