GBase Participates in 1024 Programmers' Day, Building Proprietary IP and Co-creating National Standards

From October 23 to 24, the second 'Changsha · China 1024 Programmers' Day' was held in the Changsha High-tech Zone. Themed 'Open Source and Data Empowerment — Ushering in a New Era of Digital Economy,' the event featured a range of activities including the Yuelu Summit Dialogue and the 2021 Tech Heroes Conference. GBase was invited to participate in the 'Yuelu Dialogue: Opening a New Digital Era' summit.

The conference covered topics such as open source technology and ecosystem building, operating system and hardware innovation, open source community commercialization, and fintech. It attracted thousands of developers onsite, over a hundred exhibiting companies, and more than 5 million online and offline interactions. On the afternoon of the 23rd, the summit 'Yuelu Dialogue: Opening a New Digital Era' was held. Three academicians — Gong Ke, Wang Huaimin, and Cai Zixing — engaged in in-depth discussions on open source education and talent cultivation. Ten leading database pioneers jointly explored the forces behind the rise of database technology. There were also cross-disciplinary dialogues among visionaries from sci-fi and technology on topics like the metaverse, hard sci-fi, and robotics.

At the summit, Zhao Wei, Senior Vice President of GBase, joined other database leaders in a lively discussion on the present and future of database technology.

Reflecting on the history of China's database industry, Zhao Wei remarked, “Once an exclusive luxury in the 1980s and 1990s, databases have now become ubiquitous, underpinning internet and social applications today.” In the early days of domestic databases, customers in finance, telecommunications, and aviation were nearly out of reach. Now, driven by the national strategy to enhance sci-tech innovation and achieve high-level self-reliance, these high-end sectors are adopting homegrown databases at scale.

Today, GBase series database products serve users in 34 countries and across all 32 provincial-level administrative regions in China, with over 30,000 nodes deployed and more than 300 PB of data under management. In the financial sector, GBase is among the very few domestic database vendors that have been widely deployed in core banking systems and have maintained stable operations for years. It has provided big data services to over 100 financial regulators and banks, including the People's Bank of China, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission, the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and the Agricultural Bank of China. It has also delivered transactional database products to dozens of banks, such as Beijing Rural Commercial Bank, Huaxia Bank, and Bank of Dongguan. In telecommunications, GBase has been successfully adopted by the headquarters and 65 provincial branches of China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom. For government and public sector clients, GBase has accumulated rich experience, serving more than 40 central agencies and affiliated institutions, including the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of State Security, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Water Resources, the General Administration of Customs, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

Focusing on the present, Zhao Wei believes that building an ecosystem for China's database industry can be approached from a high vantage point. While directly adopting overseas open source with full compatibility may offer high migration ease, in the long run, a healthy database ecosystem requires establishing Chinese standards, accumulating intellectual property, and forming a China IP alliance.

Looking ahead, databases know no borders, and Chinese databases are not confined to China. We should start with the young, begin with developers, and focus on customers, needs, and key industries. By leveraging Chinese scenarios and talent, we can take homegrown database development global.

Developing the digital economy first requires strengthening basic R&D capabilities in digital technology. Moving forward, GBase will continue to consolidate its technical foundation, reinforce R&D in key core technologies, and build a secure, self-controllable core technology system. We will strive to win the battle for key core technologies and press ahead to become a trusted database products and services provider.
