Yalong Hydropower Integrated Business Management Platform

Project Overview

Hydropower is a strategic national resource. The Yalong River basin is a key national hydropower base, ranking third among China’s 13 major hydropower bases in terms of development scale, with an installed capacity exceeding 10 GW. It serves as a backbone power source for China's Western Development Strategy and the West-to-East Power Transmission initiative, and is a critical pillar in building Sichuan Province into an economic powerhouse in western China.

Yalong River Hydropower Development Co., Ltd. has always placed a high priority on IT system development. Based on business requirements, the company initiated a project to replace the Oracle database used by its existing integrated business management platform with a domestically developed alternative.
Driven by its strategic vision and the growing need for deeper information capabilities, the company required a unified enterprise data center (data warehouse) to collect, transform, and store corporate management data, real-time production data, on-site data, and basin-wide spatial information. This foundation enables operational monitoring, decision analysis, visualization on the digital basin platform, and future advanced data applications.

GBase 8s was selected to replace the existing Oracle database, taking over its data collection and query functions. The key requirements included:

High performance: real-time data ingestion capability for the integrated business management platform;

High stability: robust stability to support 24/7 operations of the platform;

High availability: a high-availability cluster based on a shared storage architecture.

Implementation Plan

The system uses GBase 8s, a secure database from General Data Technology (GBase), at the data layer. While prioritizing database security management, the overall design addresses demanding business requirements for high performance, high stability, and high availability.

Data Integration Layer: Data integration consists of data acquisition and job scheduling. During data collection, data acquisition handles the migration of table structures and field types, using tools that are fully compatible with existing Oracle database historical data. Historical data and incoming data from other business systems are gradually imported into GBase 8s in the data center. Job scheduling enables real-time ingestion of current data and performs HAC asynchronous data replication, allowing other business systems to consume data center data without impacting the primary database.

Data Storage Layer: The data storage layer serves as the foundation of the entire system and is designed to be efficient, complete, and stable, providing comprehensive and accurate data sources for upper-layer applications. It leverages GBase 8s’s unique SSC (Shared Storage Cluster) multi-node cluster technology, where the primary node handles both read and write operations and SSC nodes process read operations. Backup plans are executed to persist data files onto mounted disks.

Analytic Server: Delivers data analysis results to the front-end access layer based on business requirements.

Application Results

After long-term operation, the customer confirmed that GBase 8s is a Chinese database product that can fully replace mature international databases. It exceeded expectations in stability, high performance, and high availability, seamlessly supporting the customer’s business management platform and achieving successful adoption in the energy industry.
